I have spent a lot of my life lost. I’ve traveled frequently over the years and unfortunately, my sense of direction is dismal. After I’ve been somewhere once, I can usually find it again. The first time? Not so much. I have wandered around various cities using my printed directions only to have to stop and ask someone if they can help. While I have met many nice people that way, it’s frustrating and can be confusing. “Now, you go down past the big oak tree, you can’t miss it, and then you turn left on the first hollow road you see.”
Thankfully, since I am traveling quite a bit this summer, Magellan came to my rescue with their new SmartGPS system. Since it arrived I have used it for directions to an event in Nashville, an event in Atlanta and to another event in Houston. With over 2000 miles under its belt, it’s been given a thorough workout. Plus, it managed to get me to the doorsteps of the places I needed to visit, which, with me as the navigator, is no small feat. However, this is no ordinary GPS; it’s Smart, with revolutionary features including enhanced social exploration, expanded connectivity to your devices and a seamless mobile experience from home to vehicle to sidewalk.
Here are some of my favorite features:
Dynamic Navigation Content—the day I was traveling to Nashville happened to be the first day of Bonoroo and I had to drive through the midst of it. The Smart GPS warned me of traffic alerts, so I could avoid congestion, red light cameras and fuel alerts, allowing me to purchase fuel for less during the trip. My favorite feature was the Yelp and Foursquare reviews for restaurants and attractions. We were looking for a place to eat dinner and, after finding a list of restaurants in the area, I quickly scanned the reviews before we decided where to eat.
Touch Screen Technology—the screen worked like a touch screen computer. I was able to tap the category I needed and then slide the screen to find subcategories.
Wireless Sync— I can save information between my Smartphone, my GPS and my PC. With the free MagellanSmartGPS app, I can transfer and save information on my phone. The good thing about syncing the phone is it can be used instead of the GPS in the car. I can hand it over to a passenger and they can navigate without having to touch the GPS system. There is also a “Send To SmartGPS” function that allows me to share my destination from my smartphone to the SmartGPS navigator. My SmartGPS has been programmed to my area. Whenever I am driving it picks up all area businesses, restaurants, and more, tells me the distance and provides reviews. If I decide I’d like to visit, I simply press the screen, hit “go,” and the directions appear.
Traveling has never been easier and less stressful!
