IHOP Serves Up New Handcrafted Griddle Melts

by Pam on February 24, 2013

I am always a fan of having someone else cook a meal and clean-up the dishes so when I received a chance to try the new Griddle Melts at IHOP I jumped at the chance.  I didn’t notice any objections from my family when I asked, “Who’s ready to go to IHOP?” Instead, they hurried to the car with almost unseemly haste, regaling me with tales of what they planned to order.

We were greeted with a sign detailing the New Griddle Melts as we walked in the door.  There are three available: Ham and Egg, Western Melt and Spinach Roasted Red Pepper and Cheese Melt.  Here’s the lowdown:
  • Spinach, Roasted Pepper & Cheese
Sautéed fresh spinach in a fluffy egg omelet topped with roasted red peppers and onions, melted Provolone, Parmesan and Pepper Jack cheeses on grilled artisan sourdough bread. Served with your choice of hash browns, French fries or seasonal fruit.
  • Western
Smoked ham and sautéed peppers and onions in a classic omelet, topped with sliced ham, melted American cheese and served on grilled artisan sourdough bread. Served with your choice of hash browns, French fries or seasonal fruit.
  • Ham & Egg Melt
Sliced ham and melted Swiss and American cheeses over a fluffy egg omelet served on grilled artisan sourdough bread. Served with your choice of hash browns, French fries or seasonal fruit.
While the melts are described as “Breakfast Food” they’re perfect for brunch or those days when you want “breakfast for dinner.”  We tried the Ham & Egg Melt  and the Western Melt with a side order of hash browns.  Bryan splurged and opted for cheese and onions to be scrambled into his hash browns. Yum!  I had a bite and wished I had decided to add those ingredients to my hash browns too.

I was a little concerned about having an omelet served on sourdough bread.  I like omelets and I like sourdough bread, but I had never had the two of them combined.  I didn’t need to worry though because we discovered we liked the combo.  The bread was flavorful and toasted enough to add a satisfying crunch. The omelet was light and fluffy, brimming with ham and cheese.  From the murmurs of “This is good,” to the clean plates, I discovered that the rest of the family enjoyed the melts too.  The Western Melt was basically the same but had the addition of peppers and onions.

From the murmurs of “This is good,” to the clean plates, I discovered that the rest of the family enjoyed the melts too.   The Melts are available in whole and half sandwiches. For me, I would order the half sandwich with seasonal fruit and have more than enough for one meal because the portions are generous. We left the restaurant with the men in my family vowing we would return soon. Next time I plan on ordering the delicious looking banana caramel pancakes!

Have you tried the new Hand Crafted Griddle Melts? Which one is your favorite?

I received a gift card to experience the Hand Crafted Griddle Melts for myself but was not asked to post anything but my own opinion. I’d also like to add a shout out to Ashley, our waitress. She was awesome. I’d go back just for the great service we received.

We haven’t been to IHOP in a couple of years, but there is one near our new house and those look good. My son has a class every Saturday morning, so I told my husband that we should start a tradition of going to breakfast at IHOP after his class!

I’m a vegetarian, so I don’t often eat at restaurants like IHOP, but I wish I had the recipe so I could make my own version of a Griddle Melt – it sounds really good!
