Once again my goal to turn my children’s fun time into something educational has been strengthened with a visit to the Magic Cabin. They have an entire section of “beyond toys” that includes arts and crafts, books, gardening, backyard camping and , my personal favorite, exploration and discovery. If my kids are busy exploring, discovering and having fun, they don’t realize they are learning or maybe they do realize it and just don’t care.
This year we are studying Geography and needed a globe. I had one from my childhood but it had several countries that didn’t exist anymore. Not exactly conducive to learning correct geography! While I was looking through the selection at Magic Cabin, debating on a Magz construction set that would provide hours of construction fun and drive the cats crazy with pieces to chase, I happened to see an illuminated tabletop globe.
This globe was different from others I had seen. Designed in Italy, it has a sturdy wooden base and the usual features expected on any globe; color coded topography, continents and oceans. The difference included in this globe is the colorful animals placed on the continent and area where they belong. Even the youngest children will be able to explore with this globe and learn more about the world around them.
The globe is fun to study in the daytime but even more fun to study at night. When the lights are dimmed, turn on the globe and watch as all the animals begin to glow. All of the animals were neat but I think the ones in the ocean were the most eye catching and stood out the most.
This globe would make a unique nightlight with its soft glow. It could also help children put tales from other countries in perspective by finding the country when relating the tale.
