Bacillius anthracis, yersina pestis, ebola virus and streptococcus pyogetres. That’s the scientific names of Anthrax, Ebola, Flesh Eating Bacteria, and Black Death. These four diseases have been visiting our house. Before you panic and run to disinfect your computer, I’ll explain. Although it seems my kids manage to capture every rare disease they can find, this time everyone in our household has welcomed these diseases because they are part of the Giant Microbes Halloween Collection by Drew Oliver.

Unlike their nasty, real life counterparts, these are cute little stuffed toys that can be hung from the rearview mirror of a car. Or, if you’re feeling creative, can be made into a Halloween tree to use as a Spooky Halloween decoration. Simply find a small branch with several offshoots, spray paint it black, and add the microbes. Place the branch in a small orange metal bucket for maximum effect.
Each of the microbes in the collection includes a brief description of the disease it represents. Did you know that Flesh Eating Bacteria is most commonly caused by the same strains of virus responsible for strep throats? While these would be a great gift for your favorite medical student, Giant Microbes has a huge selection of cute and cuddly diseases. I’d never thought of the sniffles as being fun before.
If you’re looking for a gag gift, they have a selection of adult diseases too.
These diseases have certainly provoked discussion around our home. Before our collection arrived, discussing disease around the dinner table was rarely done. Now, the kid’s curiosity has been aroused. Maybe we have a future doctor in our family? I can only hope.
