My secret confession of the day is ….I love chocolate. I am sure it has a special place amid the food groups; fruits, veggies, protein, dairy and chocolate. As a kid I knew chocolate deserved its own Special Holiday that could be celebrated by devouring mounds of candy. This year I was informed August 10th was National S’mores Day. I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by!
I arranged a S’mores making party with the kids, thanks to a little help from Hersheys, who sent me a S’Mores kit. They included everything we would need for our little bites of oooey, gooey bliss, an eight pack of Hershey’s Individual Sized Chocolate Bars, a package of Marshmallows, a box of graham crackers and two skewers for roasting our marshmallows.
The day I planned for our cookout turned out to be dismal; thunder, lighting, blowing winds and pouring rain prevented my feeble attempts to rush outside and build a bonfire. Not to be daunted, mainly because I was craving S’mores and had a room of hungry children, I suggested we microwave our treats. This turned out to be an excellent suggestion because no marshmallows caught on fire during our party. Usually the burnt marshmallows wind up on the ground, where someone invariably steps on them and leaves a trail of sticky marshmallow prints across my floor.
We assembled our S’mores, using one individual Hershey’s candy bar, a marshmallow, and one graham cracker, and microwaved them for approximately twenty seconds each. The marshmallows and chocolate were melted and gooey but not to hot to eat. Yum! Total bliss. Next time I make S’mores I do plan to use two marshmallows. One didn’t cover my entire cracker the why I would have liked.
While the kids missed the traditional way of creating S’mores, I didn’t hear any complaints about the ease of preparation, the short cooking time, or the taste. Instead I heard, “Hey! These are good. I think I will make another!”
Does this look like the face of someone who was disappointed not to be able to roast marshmallows? I didn’t think so either.
While National S’Mores day has passed, August 30th is National Toasted Marshmallow Day and September 13th is International Chocolate Day, perfect excuses for once again digging out the S’mores making equipment. Can’t wait that long? How about “Just because I want to eat a S’mores Day?” That could be celebrated anytime.
