‘“Are you having problems with ants this year?” Believe it or not, I ‘ve had several friends and family members ask me this question. Ants seem to be invading homes all over our area. I had never had a problem with ants in our home until this year. Unlike friends and family members, who had spent the summer complaining about ants competing with them for valuable kitchen space, I had been blissfully undisturbed. Sure, we have a large mound of fire ants out in the back yard that we try to destroy, unsuccessfully, every year, but nothing on the inside until a month ago.
My daughter, reclining on the love seat one evening, asked me, “Do we have ants?” “Nope,” I said, “never have.” “Then what are these things?” she queried. Imagine my surprise to see a trail of ants emerging from under my love seat. I tried the usual method, smushing them, but found more the next day. I decided to “up my game” and use Combat: Source Kill Max Ant Bait traps.
These bait traps came in a package of six and contain Fipronil, a powerful insecticide. Ants are drawn to the bait and carry the poison back to the queen and the colony, destroying the entire colony. The bait traps are child resistant but they do come with a warning that says “Do not allow children or pets to play with bait stations.” With that in mind, I hid my trap under the loveseat to prevent any mishaps. Before I placed it under the loveseat, I killed all the ants I saw and cleaned the entire area. I haven’t seen any ants since that time. I plan on sharing the rest of the traps with my in-laws and a couple of friends who are complaining ants have made it into their kitchen. Since the ants are coming in around the windows, they can place the traps on the sill away from any food items.
The traps are advertised as not having an odor but I did smell a faint odor when I opened the package and was holding the trap. It is not strong and doesn’t leave a pesticide odor in the air when the trap is placed in position. Combat Source Kill Max can be found at most mass retailers. Want to try it for yourself? I found a $1.00 coupon.

I’ve used ant sprays but the ants sometimes come back.
So far the most (temporarily) successful thing I’ve tried is black pepper. Apparently it must be repeated every so often- but they can’t stand the smell!
